Maths
At Durham Academy, we believe that students deserve a creative and ambitious mathematics curriculum—rich in both skills and knowledge—that ignites curiosity, builds confidence, and prepares them for everyday life and future employment.
Our mathematics curriculum is designed to give students the opportunity to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems, enabling them to develop strong conceptual understanding and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
Students will reason mathematically by exploring lines of enquiry, making conjectures, identifying relationships and generalisations, and constructing arguments or proofs using precise mathematical language.
They will also solve a range of routine and non-routine problems with growing sophistication, learning to break down complex problems into manageable steps and persevere in finding solutions.
Furthermore, students will be encouraged to respectfully communicate, justify, argue, and prove using appropriate mathematical vocabulary. In doing so, they will also develop key character traits such as resilience, confidence, and independence, empowering them to contribute positively to the life of the school, their local community, and the wider world.
