History

At Durham Academy, our history curriculum is designed to develop confident, ambitious, and respectful learners who engage critically with the past to better understand the complexities of the modern world. We aim to inspire curiosity and foster a deep appreciation for how historical events and perspectives have shaped the present.

Through a rich and diverse curriculum, students will become confident historians, equipped with the analytical skills to question evidence, construct coherent arguments, and express well-informed viewpoints. They will engage thoughtfully with a wide range of historical sources and interpretations, learning to evaluate their reliability and significance.

Our curriculum also promotes an ambitious understanding of historical narratives, encouraging students to explore a broad spectrum of perspectives from local, national, and global history. By examining different time periods and cultures, students gain a comprehensive view of the past and how it connects to the present.

In addition, we strive to cultivate a respectful appreciation of different cultures, societies, and historical experiences. Students are encouraged to recognize the value of diversity and to understand the lasting impact of history on contemporary issues.

By engaging with key historical events, figures, and debates, students will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the world as informed, reflective, and active citizens.
